Guitar Building DVD
Wood, Tools, and Plans to Build an Acoustic Guitar
Designed for the beginning guitar builder, and applicable to both steel string and classical acoustic guitars, it provides a step-by-step and comprehensive overview of the wood and guitar building kits that are available. The various hand tools, special tools and power tools that are used during the building process are discussed and shown. Jamie also shows how to use guitar building plans to make templates for the building process. Presented by luthier Jamie Boss, the presentation was filmed at his Connecticut guitar building school. During the video Jamie breaks down all the wood that is needed to build a guitar and compares building from scratch to structured kits available through Stewart-MacDonald and Luthiers Mercantile.
The wood segment will aid the beginning luthier in identifying the wood components that go into building a guitar from scratch and help the viewer decide if a kit might be a better place to start. In the tool section, Jamie identifies the basic wood working tools that are used during construction and points out the areas in which each tool is used. Dedicated tools designed especially for guitar building are also reviewed depth. He also explains the basic power tools that are commonly used during construction. The last section covers guitar building plans, how to use them and how to make building patterns.
This hour long demonstration provides critical information that is usually unavailable to the beginning guitar builder. It is part of a continuing series produced by Jamie on the art of acoustic guitar building. After viewing the video the beginning luthier will have specific knowledge of the wood components that go into building a guitar from scratch and know the advantages of building from a structured kit. He will also have a very good idea as to which general wood working tools will be required, what specialized tools he may have to purchase and what power tools are commonly used in the guitar building process. Last, he will understand the value and use of good construction plans and how they are used to make building patterns.
